Letters from Kenya
Presented as written in their own words, here are some excerpts of letters of Kisou Primary School children who attended the field trip toTsavo National Park:
Telesia Muoka
... We had a trip very luckily which was sponsored by Project Jambo to visit Tsavo West. It was the day on Saturday the 12th July. When the project told us so we jumped up like a wounded frog and screamed at the top of our voices because of joy.
When we arrived at the gate for Tsavo West we stopped there and alighted from the bus immediately. When we stood at the gate they looked at us as if we were the seven wonders of the world. For a few seconds we got on the bus and went to the Stefani lava flow from there we went to the Mzima Spring. A few minutes we arrived at a high mountain that is called Chaimu. Nevertheless every child was impressed because it was the first time to see such a mountain. Within no time we started to see animals like elephants, giraffes, hippos, zebra, dik dik and other animals. We learned names of animals and importance of animals to the country...
Kimanzi Wimengele
... I learnt very many things like the names of some of the animals and what they feed on. I also learnt the importance of animals in the Park because they bring foreign exchange to the country and provide job opportunities to the people therefore improving the living standard of the people in the nation. Therefore I was encouraged to support the conservation of the wildlife in the nation...
Mutua Mathumbi
... It was the day of joy when our patron of our club informed us that we will visit Tsavo West. We fell in laughing and full of joy. Although the trip was on a Saturday. But I didn’t sleep the whole night...
Sila Mantunzu
... When we start our journey the matatu was babbling as if it was dancing. On the way we saw bridges, roads and railway...
Mary Mwania
... We like to have trips but our parents cannot afford a trip because they are extremely poor. We decided that we shall go to visit Tsavo West. So when he told us that strange thing, everybody was very happy. And when I went to sleep I did not get enough sleep because I was remembering that journey to Tsavo West because I had never gone there. He told us the time was at a 5 a.m. so when on the day came, I woke up before the crack of dawn and everything was quiet except the birds which was singing in sweet songs. So I took bath very quickly and when I finished to wash myself, I returned back to the room and I wore my school uniform, a pair of socks, rubber shoes and a sweater because it was very cold. So I started my journey feeling very well... We saw many different animals and we learned their names and what they are. For example we learned the elephants eat grass. And finally I saw importance of animals to the country...
