RETURN TO KENYA Project Jambo staff and volunteers will be returning to Kenya in late May, 2008. Our original journey was stalled because of some unfortunate circumstances.

Widespread violence broke out in western Kenya and Nairobi following the Presidential election in December. The consequences have been immense: Over 500,000 people have lost their homes and more than 1,000 have died.
Leaders from around the world including Kofi Annan and Desmond Tutu have been traveling there since late December to quell the unrest. The opposing parties have come to an agreement to work together. So it’s time for all of us to move forward.
Despite the events in Kenya we’ve managed to keep tabs on the primary and secondary schools and sponsored students. We are thrilled to report they are all back in school now. However, one of our students (Jennifer) who was in Nairobi at the time wrote, “It was very dangerous to walk out of our houses. The shops and supermarkets were damaged and things stolen but because God was with us we were rescued and none of us was injured.” This message didn’t deter us but rather reinforced our mission.

GOALS OLD AND NEW
We will be taking classroom produced materials with us to share with the students. JAMBO is still accepting donations for the library fund. All the literary material will be purchased in Kenya so we can use all the money for books, not shipping costs!
The Iviani community has great expectations. So far, they’ve cleared a room for the library, fixed the floor and the parents will be starting to build the shelving very soon.
So far we’ve collected roughly $3,000 but our goal is $10,000. So please keep those donations coming and we will continue our work on behalf of the students in this area.

OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS
Our Sherman Oaks presentation really impacted one student in particular. A student at The Buckley School agreed to personally sponsor a student by raising the funds necessary for her secondary education next year! She established her own business and is busy knitting scarves for her Eva Diva Original line.
Stay tuned for the Summer newsletter, we will have updates from our trip and the winners of the JAMBO art contest will be announced! Thanks again for your participation.
Thank you to all those who’ve donated their time in addition to money for the JAMBO cause! Tarice L.S. Gray wrote this issue of our newsletter.
