Rosemont Middle School's Jog-Walk-A-Thon is a Smashing Success!

Teacher Shannon Estrada announced the fund raiser she organized to support Jambo's "Educate a Child" program with this article in La Crescenta's "Valleynews.com"
Want to help children in Africa, but don't have $40 million like Oprah? Well, Rosemont Middle School students, in La Crescenta, are ready to rise to the challenge.
Hello, my name is Shannon Estrada and I am a seventh grade English teacher. After taking a trip to Africa this summer I just knew I had to do something to help the children.
While in Africa I met with a teacher who only had eight books in her entire school, I immediately felt very spoiled with the new lap tops that my students are currently working with. I felt an urgency to inform my students of how lucky they are to be in the American school system. I also wanted them to step outside of themselves and help kids thousands of miles away from their homes.
Upon my return home, I met with a local nonprofit charity Project Jambo. Their motto is "Changing lives through education". The project adopts young African students who cannot afford to continue past an eighth grade education, and places them in a private school. Many young girls who are not placed in a school turn to prostitution or are left to work the farms. Education is their road to a brighter future.
It is amazing what Oprah has done in Africa, but what is even more amazing is what 12-year-olds can do to make a huge difference. It costs just $500 a year for an African child to attend school past sixth grade. The $500 includes room, board, books, food, and uniforms. Students at Rosemont have adopted nine African girls, their own age, to send to school. We will be holding a Jog-Walk-A-Thon on March 30 from 3-4:30 p.m. at Rosemont Middle School.
Students will be raising money from sponsors to participate in this event. 100 percent of the money raised will go to the girl's education. We will be raffling off over 100 prizes donated from local businesses as the students jog or walk. Plus, a limo service has generously offered their service for the top two students who raise the most money.
I think it is so important to show what our children are doing to make this world a better place. Every time we turn on the TV we see what kids are doing wrong, but here is a great opportunity to report on what our kids are doing right. There is a story here!
Rosemont Middle School would like to invite you to come to our Jog-Walk-A-Thon. You can be a part of changing someone's life. You too can help get the word out about Project Jambo, promote awareness, and show my 12-year-old students that they really are a part of our world and do have the power to make a difference.
